They Said Yes — Stories of Courage from Berlin, Honduras

There is a moment when someone decides that it is not too late. That despite everything life has thrown at them — the missed opportunities, the years without a classroom, the quiet shame of not being able to read a simple sign or write their own name — they choose to believe that today can be different.

In Berlin, Honduras, 14 adults had that moment. And they said yes.

When the Adult Learners Program opened its doors, nobody knew what the response would be. Would people show up? Would they push past the fear of being seen struggling, of sitting in a classroom as a grown adult surrounded by others just like them?

They did. Every single one of them.

Some came quietly, slipping into their seats with nervous smiles. Others arrived with determination written all over their faces. Nine of them are beginning at a first-grade reading level. Five are starting at second grade. But every single one of them walked through that door, and that took more courage than most of us will ever know.

This is not just a literacy program. This is a group of human beings reclaiming something that was never offered to them as children. It is dignity in action. It is hope with a pencil in its hand.

Because of donors like you who support the Honduras Family/Literacy Fund, these 14 adults have everything they need to begin — reading books, notebooks, pens, pencils, and a teacher who believes in every one of them.

Their story is just beginning. And we have a feeling it is going to be one worth telling for a very long time.

The Honduras Family/Literacy Fund makes everything you read about possible — adult literacy classes, books and supplies, teacher support, and critical community needs like clinic repairs, emergency food, soccer shoes for young players, and more. If this story moved you, consider giving today.
